The Hutcheson and alliedfamilies papers consist of letters, photographs, printed matter, genealogyrecords, and personal family materials. The bulk includes correspondencebetween family members dating to the 1840s and continuing into the 1990s. Thegenealogy of the Hutcheson family is very detailed and there is much familyhistory on collateral lines. The Hutcheson family includes prominent Houston,Texas attorneys, judges, and statesmen. Allied families such as the Weeden,Pye, Carrington, Codrington, and Barker families also figure prominently inTexas history.

A nationally known jurist and legal scholar, Joseph C. Hutcheson, Jr. served as federal judge for the Southern District of Texas (1918-1931) and on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (1931-1964), including 12 years as chief judge (1948-1959).
